Rockhurst High School is a Jesuit preparatory high school located on State Line Road in Kansas City, MO, the street that literally runs along the border of Missouri and Kansas. A strong dedication to work, academics, and brotherhood, as embraced by all Jesuit schools is at the core of the Rockhurst choral program. Students arriving at Rockhurst come from dozens of parochial and public middle schools around the Kansas City area, and on average more than half of our ninth-grade choir students have never even started to learn to read music. This situation necessitates a serious regimen of building musical knowledge and vocal skill from the ground up, but that hard task is one that creates an opportunity for young men to become a team and together to overcome the obstacles of a lack of musical background and a changing voice! The curriculum works to develop an individual’s solo technique and challenges them to contribute their full and unique sound to the overall strength of the ensemble. Students are taught to value work ethic over talent, trusting the process to create a good product.
"Ad maiorem Dei gloriam": to the greater glory of God is the Latin motto of the society of Jesus, the founders of Rockhurst High School. Our program believes strongly that God is found in all things, and by extension in the vigorous pursuit of the arts. Our students help lead in school masses by providing both service and special music. Rockhurst seeks to graduate "men for others" who are open to growth and dedicated to the service of others. The choral curriculum is the perfect compliment to this vision. To find success, team-oriented classes must build a stronger brotherhood as the students pursue excellence in another, perhaps more unusual activity (not too many all-male school have a choral program like this one!). Our graduates grow academically as musicians, but they also experience personal growth as they learn to sing together and each become an important part of the RockChoirs community.
